Project Details

Our team member Tobias leads a team of Yawo translators and transcribers to provide access to the Bible to Yawo people, who haven’t ever heard or read it in their own language before!

For Yawo people who cannot read or where reading does not resonate like oral storytelling, they are able to listen to the Word of God in their own heart language.

The first stage was an oral translation of the book Genesis, which was completed in 2022. We partnered with a major Christian media organisation to provide software, logistical support and training.

In 2023, the team worked on Exodus 1-20, as well as the book of Matthew and a selection of Psalms.

It will take many years to translate the whole Bible, as we are committed to thorough and rigorous checking to ensure that it holds firm to the Word of God and is linguistically and culturally understandable for the recipients.

Funds cover the costs of equipment, translators’ wages, consultant costs, theological and exegetical resources, utilities, as well as the exciting opportunity for printing.

Our engagement with this project not only benefits those who can hear and read the scriptures for generations to come, it also supports education, vocation, faith development and livelihoods of our translation team.

Partnering with this project, at its heart, is seeing the Word of God accessible to the Yawo people. It is empowering Yawo communities to follow Jesus in ways that makes sense to them.
